Beat Sprinter

Attention, please! There is a new player in the business, it’s “Two Hundo Games”, a development studio, that has recently released their third app, “Beat Sprinter 2020”.

In this app, you steer a swordfighter through minimalistic levels trying to avoid or smash as many obstacles as possible.

Let’s go!

Jump and Run is kind of fun

The upside

Despite the minimalistic, arcade-like retro-style theme of the game, the animations of the main character aren’t old-fashioned at all. Actually, I would even say that the ragdoll physics, moving and jumping animations are one of the best I’ve ever seen in an indie game. Period.

But you won’t only see the quality of this game, you will also hear it. The library of music tracks is absolutely phenomenal and the great choice of music makes you literally feel like it’s out of this world.

Also kind of “out of this world” is the monetization of this game – there is none! It’s 100% ad-free, which is a welcome change these days.

Plus, there is something that keeps me motivated playing the game, although I hardly made it past the second level, because it is…

The downside

… beastly hard. This is something I regularly criticize and I won’t stop doing that, even after reviewing 1000 indie games. This time, however, the difficulty isn’t because there are too many obstacles or impossible situations, it’s based on the Prince of Persia paradox.

Back in 1985, the brother of Jordan Mechner modelled for the animations for the original Prince of Persia game leading to a fantastic look, but terrible handling. Why? Simply because the animations were too human-like. In video games, especially with simple controls like this one, you are used to precise controls and simplified animations. But a human stumbles, trips and swings. In “Beat Sprinter 2020”, you see very human-like animations, that look fantastic but make the game harder than it should be.

Or I am just too bad, who knows. 🙂

But no matter if the developers balance the difficulty or not, a global leaderboard would be a great addition to the game.
