Chapeau to “The Shy Shrew” crew for creating an app, that is not only here to entertain us, but rather to raise awareness for a very delicate topic. A topic, that is essential for every living being on this planet. It’s about Donald Trump’s announcement to withdraw the U.S. from Paris climate agreement. Whereas in reality, no one seems to offer opposition to trump (with success), in this alternate reality, a bunch of Panda bears challenge Trump – to a golf match. If they win, he must resign to resign. Good luck with that!

The intrinsic values are what counts

This app does definitely have its heart in the right place. It puts a very important topic on the agenda, offers valuable background information to it and yet manages the balancing act to make an enjoyable mobile game based on a severe issue. Especially the intro scene (skippable, but you should watch it at least once) is well-done and both humorous and serious at the same time. It’s a bittersweet combination, showing that the strength of “Panda vs Trump” lies within its intrinsic values.

All show and no substance?

Usually, the idiom “All show and no substance” paraphrases a phantasmagoria, that is all smoke and mirrors. This game has a strong background story, so there is nothing to cover and nothing to hide. Still, “Panda vs Trump” lays it on thick as if there’s no tomorrow (which will maybe be the case, if we continue to treat Mother Earth like we do).

I am talking about graphics. Animations. About animated water, animated clouds, an animated “All lives matter” banner, an animated color wheel behind your animated character, an animated… you get the idea, right? It’s actually the first time, I had performance issues with a mobile game, that is clearly based on the overuse of animations dropping the FPS below 30.

The love for details in this game is extraordinary, but I’d prefer a clearer user interface, a smooth-running game, and a higher overall speed.

One small step for a panda, one giant leap for mankind.

The Verdict

There is at least one reason to install “Panda vs Trump: Gold Kombat” on your smartphone. It’s a political statement, that’s necessary to set an example and stand against the catalysts of climate change. On top of that, it’s an enjoyable golf game with just a few flaws, that can easily be fixed. Download the game here.
