Perigee Review
29. January 2018ReBeat Review
2. February 2018Ladies and Gentlemen, I present "Squidley", the cuter, but harder alternative to Doodle Jump.
Doodle Jump isn’t just a game anymore, it’s a genre. And “Bounce Squidley Bounce” is the fourth review on the Daikon Media blog, where we ask ourselves the question: “How high can we get?” (Which is also a very common question in California, but that’s another story).
Cute, Fast and Handy
It’s easy to say something good about Squidley, because you’ll see all advantages at first sight. Unlike Doodle Jump’s unlikeable vuvuzela, Squidley is a loveable character you want to play with. Yes, actually it’s kinda cute.
Plus, there are absolutely zero lags on our midrange testing device (Samsung Galaxy J5) and the controls are pretty handy, which comes in handy for an app, that’s being put to the test. Unfortunately, there is something putting a spoke in my wheel to fully enjoy this game…
Hard or unfair?
I know that there are more levels to this game (like an outer space level with aliens) and so much more enemies to avoid and things to see. But what does that do for me, if I’m not able to survive for more than 30 seconds? Squidley’s movements are too inflexible, the enemies are too strong (and fast) and the only thing that’s on your side is – literally – a huge pile of shit, standing for a spiral spring, that lets you almost automatically jump up to your certain death.
For now, the many instant deaths are simply frustrating for me, especially because of the ad-breaks that appear after, I guess, three or five deaths. In my case, this leads to the unacceptable state of spending more time on watching ads than on actually playing the game. I don’t know if it’s just me, but if there are more than just a few people, who will identify “Squidley” as too hard, the developer should definitely think of implementing an easy mode or balancing the main game. It’s just a small step to unlock the full potential of the game and to make it enjoyable for the whole audience. I think it’s absolutely worth it!
- Cute Character
- No Lags
- Easy Controls
- Easy mode
- Better balancing
- Less ad breaks
The Verdict
Cute, but hard – that’s maybe the perfect caption for “Squidley”. The question is: Do you accept the challenge? If the answer is “yes”, download the game here.
