Tired of the Star Wars hype? Or are you still longing for some space battles? Howsoever, in "Aethon" you can join another intergalactic rebellion.

Another space game is waiting for a review and I am the last one to deny that. “Aethon” by “Red Shirt Games” is an unreleased space shooter, in which you “take part in the rebellion against the empire and free the galaxy from its influence.” Sounds like the perfect game to get into the mood fo Star Wars 8, right? Right!

Now THIS ship needs a lot of upgrades…

The Vast Universe

Aethon is huge. It comes along with a cleverly designed upgrade system, a considerable range of features and functions and a tremendous amount of stages (=orbits), all virtuosically named as no Sci-Fi author could have done it better. “Shides 46-2”, “Chekalara”, “Strecenus”. Perfect.

Although “Aethon” has the scope of a full-fledged triple-A title, it’s accessible, easy to pick up and linear as a typical mobile game. Therefore, you could say that it combines the best of both worlds, which is nice.

Plus, given that I’ve only played the development build, you can already say that the game runs more smoothly and less buggy than many games on their release date. Chapeau, guys!

Things to Do

Nevertheless, the game isn’t finished yet and I gladly take the opportunity to contribute some ideas of what to do before pushing the release button.

  1. Sounds and Music – at the moment, the game doesn’t utter a beep. It’s completely silent (like outer space itself), which might be realistic, but not particularly helpful for an entertainment product. Well, I guess the developer will work on it anyway, but I just wanted to emphasize its importance.
  2. Action and Movement – I don’t know if “Red Shirt Games” are aware of how static and motionless their game is at the moment. There are too little particles faking a flight through space and the fact, that you cannot move your spaceship doesn’t help either. In fact, you can only choose the target (the ship shoots automatically) and one of your four special skills. This is a bit lame, especially in the first stages, where you only have one special ability.
  3. Skill or will? – By now, it is not possible to master the first levels without failing, no matter how hard you try. You have to upgrade your ship at least 2-3 times to be successful since you only have two performable actions: Selecting the target and restoring your shield. And no matter how you combine these actions, skill doesn’t decide on failure or victory, it’s only your mere willpower to replay the stages until your ship has the necessary updates. Quite unchallenging for gamers, who rely on their capabilities.

Besides that, “Aethon” is well on its way to conquer the universe!
